New, neon soaked Fortnite: Rocket Racing event starts today

Get fast and/or furious with this Neo Tokyo drift.

It’s time to feel the glow in Rocket Racing, Fortnite‘s premiere racing experience. Neon Rush is a new event that picks up where “Season 0” ended. However, Epic stresses that they’re getting away from the seasonal concept in favor of more generalized updates. It all sounds like typical “seasonal” content to me, but they might be trying to maintain content expectations.

If you haven’t had a chance to check it out, Rocket Racing is essentially it’s own game within Fortnite. Made by Epic and Psyonix, the team behind Rocket League, it’s an energetic racing mode reminiscent of the Cruisin’ series.

So what’s new with Neon Rush? For starters, 5 new official tracks. Four of them are bathed in delicious neon lights. The fifth is a decidedly more humble village ride called Slap Happy. But the real big feature is centered around allowing creator-made tracks.

Anybody can go into Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) and design their own tracks. Like many of Fortnite‘s game modes, it creates an island code that you can then share to have people race on your track. Or, players can hop into track selection playlists to find something fresh to run through. I’m excited to see what amazing nonsense people will come up with. A quick glance into the game right now shows at least 3 different Rainbow Road-style courses.

Now that “Season 0” is over, a new ranked period begins with Neon Rush. Again, they stress this isn’t a season, but the ranked period will end when Neon Rush ends. You know, like a season. They didn’t give a clear date for when it ends, but a new set of quests are set to end on June 25, so consider that a general deadline. They’re also going to be implementing leaderboards for Speed Run tracks. New quests will also be added, allowing you to earn new wheels and color trails for your vehicle of choice.

Epic and co. also advertised two new bundles are coming. The Fuse Starter Quest Pack features a new character, Matius. He’s useable in Fortnite, and includes a Lego style. You’ll also get the Fuse Car, some decals, and a bundle of quests to unlock more content for the car. The Werewolf Car bundle, which is available now, comes with the fancy new vehicle and a bunch of decals. All of these items are useable in Rocket Racing AND Rocket League, if you’re into car soccer.

Overall, this looks like an exciting content update for one of Fortnite‘s newest mainline modes. If you haven’t tried it, it’s entirely free to play in Fortnite. Elsewhere in the game, look out for the Avatar: The Last Airbender gang!
