Repeatedly, we learn that slashing App Store prices is a good thing.

On Friday, we pointed out that PopCap Games’ mobile port of Peggle was available for ninety-nine cents via the App Store until the end of the weekend. Responding to the sexy price, people purchased the title like mad: the game catapulted from the number sixty spot on the best-selling App chart all the way to number one.

The title certainly deserved the boost: the majority of the games competing in the same space and winning are garbage. The new position — and the following re-pricing to $4.99 — will presumably bring in more cash to PopCap Games.

MTV Multiplayer recently explored how sellers fiddle with prices and therefore the “top-selling” list with Peggle’s recent success as the example. It’s obvious Apple needs to fix something: there’s no reason sellers should have to slash prices in order to rise above the clutter.

In a conversation with Joystiq, PopCap Games noted that they’re still trying to figure out the App Store. “[The] App Store is still kind of an experimental arena or environment for anyone who is making products there.”

What’s your take? Are you all about the cheaper games? Or does the App Store need a tune-up (or clean-up)?
