Mighty Milky Way is your new planet-hopping puzzle game

I’ve been sitting on this story for a little while, but I’ve been held back by  Dtoid’s strict policy against posting American magazine scans on the front page. The announcement of Mighty Milky Way is a Nintendo Power exclusive, and as such, developer WayForward is yet to put and official screens of the game on the web (not that I can find anyway). Frustrated and desperate to post something on this Sunday morning, I decided to just whip up some fan art of the game (seen above) for use as a header image. I think it does a reasonable job of passing along the general idea of the game, though WayForward’s sprite work is obviously much, much nicer.

I had to stare at screens for a good ten minutes in order to whip that art up, and I’ll tell you, I’m still not sick of looking at this game. The character design and sprite artwork are just fantastic. The game’s premise sounds just as impressive. Playing as Luna, you’re tasked to make your way across the milky way, but the only means of transport is planet hopping. Well, that’s not quite accurate. Planet destroying and planet forming is more like it. Using the gravitational pull of the planets that you create and destroy, you guide Luna through the stars, avoiding an manipulating enemies, obstacles, along the way. To me, that sounds like the best parts of Super Mario Galaxy, but in 2D puzzle platformer form.

Much like Mighty Flip Champs (WayForward’s first foray into DSiWare), Might Milky Way is likely to become one of the best games on the DS’s download service. I’ll be contacting WayForward on Monday to see if I can squeeze some more info out of them regarding this promising new title.
