Microsoft reportedly working on its own virtual reality technology

Livin’ in the virtual world

VR — virtual reality — is hot at GDC this year. It’s not just the Oculus Rift. Strange men and women come up to you here and ask to put things on your face. Then they shove their weird goggles onto your face before you can process the question. Someone is stealing eyes, I bet.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Microsoft is getting into the virtual reality game as well, though details are slimmer than a colorful metaphor. Its filed one patent and is also working on a project called “Fortaleza,” or “fortress” in Portuguese. One iteration of Microsoft’s virtual technology play reportedly leaned on augmented reality (like Sony’s Playroom) rather than Riftian VR.

Of course, Sony is thought to be announcing its presumably consumer-grade VR sometime this week, so Microsoft will have some catching up to do.
