As you may have heard, actor and creator Justin Roiland courted more controversy than he could handle this year, and was axed from every project he was a part of: even shows where he voiced the main character(s). While everyone has handled it differently, High on Life, thus far, is the only one to completely toss his characters in the trash.
Justin Roiland does not appear in High on Knife, the DLC story for High on Life. While we were all waiting to see what would happen with Squanch Games’ latest project, Roiland’s absence is explained at the very beginning of the game. Kenny, the talking Gatlian gun that serves as the deuteragonist to your player character avatar, is completely missing in action and was “lost” before the events of the DLC (which takes place two years after the campaign). Harper, a gun who performs primarily the same function as Kenny, replaces him. Roiland also does not voice any side characters in the DLC, which is significant, as he provided voicework for myriad characters in the original.
It’s a clever way to handle Roiland’s absence and an easy way to explain the fact that Kenny is just gone going forward. Given that the DLC is about Knifey (another talking weapon companion) anyway, this choice perfectly serves the narrative, as Kenny’s story was already over and done with. They even hint that Kenny was thrown down into a hole at the very end of the DLC; so unless they replace the voice in a potential sequel, Kenny seems gone for good.
High on Knife is also a completely standalone DLC, so you won’t be seeing any Roiland-voiced characters in any capacity, as you can’t revisit old content unless you select a separate save file for the original campaign.
