Introducing Battlefield Heroes: free gaming with a snazzy cartoon style

The latest title in the popular line of Battlefield games is a major overhaul — both physically and economically — from the traditional look and feel of the series. Battlefield Heroes is looking a little (well, a lot) like Team Fortress 2, but that’s definitely not a bad thing.

Set for a summer 08 release via download, Battlefield Heroes is one game that we can all afford without skimping out on other areas of our personal lives. At the low, low price of free, you’ll finally be able to pay your electric bill and play a shiny new shooter with your online buddies — all without resorting to piracy.

Commenting on Battlefield Heroes, Senior Producer at EA DICE, Ben Cousins, had this to say:

“There’s something here for all types of players — be it our core Battlefield fans or casual gamers. With the new online model, we will continually add new content to keep the game fresh and keep players engaged, while integrating player feedback in real time. As a game developer, it is such a cool new way to make games.”

There is one slight catch though: in order to actually, y’know, fund the game, EA has opted to support ads, and micro-transactions will surely be in no short supply. But hey, as long as I’m not going to be virtually raped with either high prices or a lack of killer content, there’s no reason to not like this business model. Right?
