The arrival of Fortnite’s annual Fortnitemares event means there are lots of special, seasonal tasks you can tackle to earn prizes. Most of them rquire you to explore tricky new gameplay features, though, as is the case with the smash a Pumpkin Chest to find a Sprite quest.
Since these chests aren’t part of the standard gameplay and you’re not told where to find them, it can be a tough one to work through. It’s a key mission to check off if you want to claim some free event goodies, though, so here’s how to smash a Pumpkin Chest to find a Sprite in Fortnite.

Where to find Pumpkin Chests in Fortnite
Pumpkin Chests can be found randomly all around the island for the duration of the Fortnitemares event. They’re a bit more common around main spooky POIs, though, including both Nightmare Neighborhood and Freaky Fields. The smaller Landmark location Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza is a great spot to check for them, too.
These special containers are easy to distinguish from regular chests since they’re pumpkin-shaped, orange, and emit a dark purple glow. Once you know what they look like, you can oftentimes spot them from pretty far away, so keep an eye out while exploring to avoid missing any.
In my own explorations, I’ve found that Pumpkin Chests seem to be especially common near the outer edges of main POIs and buildings. Since they’re pumpkin-themed, they’re often placed out in nature, whether it be near the bottom of a tree, close to some bushes, around the edges of a forest, or in a small patch of grass.

Smash a Pumpkin Chest to find a Sprite in Fortnite
To smash a Pumpkin Chest to find a Sprite, locate one of these containers, walk up to it, and hold down the button that appears next to the “Smash” option that pops up. It varies by platform, but the right button to hold is always displayed when you’re standing in front of a Pumpkin Chest to make this process easier.
What do Pumpkin Chests drop in Fortnite?
Pumpkin Chests are guaranteed to drop a Sprite, making them an excellent resource when you’re attempting to find all Sprites in Chapter Seven, season four. The Sprite you get each time you open one is random, so how rare or common it is ultimately comes down to luck and random chance.
Since all Pumpkin Chests have a Sprite, all you need to do for the smash a Pumpkin Chest to find a Sprite quest is locate one of these containers, interact with it to break it open, and pick up whichever Sprite drops. Even if you don’t want to fully extract it, be sure to at least pick up the Sprite temporarily to make sure you get this mission done.
