How to get the Cryolator gun early in Fallout 4

Put those mutants on ice from day one.

Fallout 4 has some very interesting and even zany weapons for players to make a mess with as they explode mutants in The Commonwealth. One of these, the Cryolator gun, is a unique weapon that can be obtained right at the beginning of the game, and it doesn’t take much work to get it.

Getting Fallout 4’s Cryolator weapon

While in Vault 111 at the very beginning of Fallout 4, players will end up in the Overseer’s office, which has a few goodies to grab before heading out into the irradiated wasteland. One of these, the Cryolator, is tantalizingly displayed in a box behind a Master level lock. Many people will assume they have to come back later after leveling up lockpicking, but it’s actually simpler than that.

Head out of Vault 111 and skip the exploration of Sanctuary for now. Instead, progress straight ahead, in an easterly direction, and cross the large wooden bridge. You’ll know you’re going in the right direction if you see a tower in the distance with a white ball on top or a Red Rocket sign on an old building. Sniffing around the Red Rocket is Dogmeat, who will become your faithful companion if you’ll have him.

With the panting K9 in tow, return to Vault 111. Hit the red button in the nearby trailer to get the elevator working again, then hop onto it and head back to the Overseer’s office. Make sure you’ve looted everything else in the room. Move the cursor over Dogmeat and hit the A button (on Xbox) to Command him. Then press Y for Talk, Y again for Fetch, and X for Items.

Dogmeat will begin searching and grab the Cryolator out of the locked box for you. Note that, while he usually does it right away, it may take a few tries. Open the Command window again, but this time hit X for Trade. This will open the trade interface, and you’ll see that Dogmeat is holding the Cryolator and 200 Cryo Cells for you to grab.

You now have one of the most powerful weapons in Fallout 4. Firing its cryogenic spray continuously at most enemies will cause them to freeze in place for a short time. While not the best gun in the game, it’s still incredibly fun to goof around with for a while and will definitely give your fledgling Sole Survivor a leg up in the ghoul-ridden post-apocalyptic wasteland.
