How to get more crew slots in Starfield

As you make your way across the galaxy in Starfield, your circle of friends (and enemies) will grow. Some of them (the friends) are folks you probably want to take with you on your journey. But you first need to find out how to bring as many as you can on your ship. There are ways to get new crew slots in Starfield, giving you multiple opportunities to fill the coldness of space with warm conversation.

You can plug points into the Ship Command skill to increase the amount of “active crew members,” but in my opinion, the fun is in creating. The most obvious approach to get more crew slots is to scour Starfield for a better ship. While the wily Frontier makes for a good first choice, its default form doesn’t leave much room for activities. You can have a maximum of two crew members, meaning three characters including your own at first. Want to expand the roster? Then it’s time for an upgrade.

Build or upgrade a ship for more Starfield crew slots

Go to a nearby starport and check your options. You can customize your ship with new, more powerful modules as you level up through the game. But what you need to look for are cockpits and habs. They include a ‘Crew Capacity’ stat which shows you how many more people you can bring along. Some cockpits allow four, six, or more new members. But keep in mind: With higher-quality parts, you need a more powerful reactor and engines — which can also add to crew capacity.

“Borrow” a ship indefinitely, or purchase one

For me, I chose the easy way to get more crew slots in Starfield. I stole my ship, a Va’ruun Hymn that had the audacity of parking itself on the same planet I was occupying at the time. I am not a forgiving man. After I freed it of its captors, I upgraded it and painted it a slick space-faring black and white (image above). The Hymn has a default crew capacity of four, which I filled with some fellow Constellation members. If you don’t want to steal a ship, all the starports in the game sell them.
