Both have their strengths and weaknesses

In Helldivers 2, having an AI companion to help you decimate swarms of bugs and blast down the deadly automatons can be very effective. Eventually you’ll have access to both the Rover and the Guard Dog, but can only equip one of the two. So between the Rover and the Guard Dog, which dog is better?

Should you use the Rover or the Guard Dog?

Even though both dogs can be effective, the Rover is overall the better guard dog to use. For starters, the Rover uses laser ammo which is infinite meaning you don’t have to worry about it eventually running out of ammo and becoming useless like the Guard Dog.

The Rover has less upfront damage than the Guard Dog but ramps up due to charging its laser. Paired with its unlimited ammo, this makes the Rover extremely lethal. Just make sure your friends stay out of the way of the Rover, as the lethal damage can also be applied to teammates.

The primary reason the Rover is better is simply the infinite ammo via laser. The Guard Dog quickly runs out of ammo and will chew through supply drops insanely quickly.

When is the Guard Dog better?

The strengths of the Guard Dog are that it deals more upfront direct damage, and also does not deal any friendly fire damage. If you’re in certain group situations where the Rover could end up dealing a lot of friendly fire damage to your teammates, then you may want to consider switching to the Guard Dog.

Keep in mind, however, that the Guard Dog has extremely limited ammo. Therefore, you will have to make sure to use some of your supply drops on refilling the ammo of the Guard Dog as opposed to replenishing ammo for you or your teammates.
