The Gears of War film hit a bump in the road earlier this year when it was reported that director Len Wiseman skipped out on the project. Does that mean its dead in the water? Nah — in Hollywood, nothing ever really dies, and according to Epic’s Cliff Bleszinski, it’s still in the works.
Speaking with The Movie Pool at Comic-Con this year, the designer said they’re currently taking a look at the script and likely to start from scratch. With the original film’s budget ballooning and studios not biting, Blezsinksi says they hope to take a different a approach, saying they’ like to make the film more like the successful sci-fi action flick, District 9.
I’m pretty confident a Gears of War film, in the right hands, could make for some fabulous summer blockbuster material. I’m also pretty sure that Bleszinski and company wouldn’t let this go awry; I have a gut feeling Epic is pretty careful with its properties. Sure, it might be awhile before we see some live-action Locusts bursting from the core of a planet, only to get their faces chainsawed in half. But hey, that’s okay with me… as long as they get chainsawed in the face right.
