Although former Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker seems to have disowned the above song, Mis-Shapes is easily in my top five ever tracks written by this particular singer and social commentator. A great tune in its own write, a rather awesome video and a message that perhaps one or two of us may find pertinant.
Also, happy birthday to our very own Mike “Savant” Ferry! He turned 804 today, and I’d like us all to extend our wishes of merriment and lust for this fine purveyor of Destructoid’s Miniboss Mondays.
As always, hit the jump for our Games of the Week.

Conrad: I have been playing a lot of Rock Band 2. Sadly, my bass pedal cracked last night and, while I suck at drums and don’t bother playing them anymore, it’s going to have a really negative effect on encouraging my buddies to come over and play until I can get it fixed.

And I’ve been replaying as many Megaman games as I can before MM9 comes out on Monday. It’s reminding me of a story, but I think I might just save that for this week’s RetRose Tinted.

Colette: Rock Band 2, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner, DDR Max 7, Beatmania, Technictix and best of all, Super Mic Chan, a PS2 import that requires you to play by screaming into a microphone for long intervals. Not kidding at all.

DMV: Resistance: Fall of Man is almost done with (thank God), and so I’m biding my time until I get something to really sink my teeth into.

Niero: I played Actraiser, Golgo 13, and the original Mega Man briefly today and enjoyed every minute of that.  Earlier this week I broke out a ton of rhythm games following my eavesdropping on the recording of Retroforce GO: DDRMax2, BeatMania Da Da Da, Technitrix, Super Mic Chan, Space Channel 5 part 2, Cool Cool Toon, and finally whooped Leviathan’s ass in Final Fantasy IV.  I feel like its taking forever to grind though that game.  I’m looking carve out some time this week to finally get going on No More Heroes and Dynasty Warriors 6; both which have been collecting dust on my desk for months in shrink wrap … unless I can find my copy of Donkey Konga first.

Jim: I am now officially addicted to Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. It’s one of the dumbest videogames I have ever played in my life, but that’s part of the reason I love it. Just incredibly stupid, camp and lame — it’s brilliant. Also, Miles Edgeworth is a fucking fox. Mrrrow!

I also picked up Chilli Con Carnage, but it was shit, so I broke the UMD to make me feel better. It’s a shame, because I loved Total Overdose. Also, I’ve been hooked on Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise, and big shout out to “Superted,” who I met at EA’s press event and was a big fan of Destructoid — thanks for sending me that Limeoceros with a monocle.

On the subject of EA’s event, I got to spend several hours with Dead Space. If people go into that game expecting something that doesn’t innovate, but does what it does extremely well, then they won’t be disappointed. Think RE4 in space and you’re onto a winner.

Topher: Our rhythm game episode seems to have sent everyone involved into a music game frenzy, and while I did play a lot of Rhythm Tengoku Gold and Taiko no Tatsujin this week, I spent most of my gaming time going through some of my favorite Q Entertainment games, since we didn’t go into them as much on the show. So I played through Rez a couple times, and downloaded a few new skins for Lumines Live and zoned out with that for a while. Otherwise, it’s been my usual diet of Gokujou Parodious and Super Puzzle Fighter. What I’m really looking forward to is Kumatanchi.

Dale: I’m enjoying blatantly non-bemani games like Rhythm Tengoku Gold, Donkey Konga, and even Daigasso Band Bros 2 (GASP!) this week as we feature rhythm games. The downtime between these has been spent playing Nocturne and also laughing to myself when people don’t get the point of a non-perfect top ten list. No one would talk about a perfect one, right?

Topher: Please tell me how you got Diagasso BB2 to work on your DS. I’ve been trying to play that for a month, but patches and updates don’t seem to be doing what they should. 🙁

Mike: Considering today’s my birthday, I’m playing drink beer and eat lots of cake. It’s pretty fun, actually.

But, seriously, i have been digging on eBay for old, obscure PC adventure titles. I just picked up Dark Fall: The Journal for $1. Also, I just started my career in GRID for the 360. What a fantastic racing game, even though the cars handle like a Razor Scooter 90% of the time.

Jonathan: Holy crap! Happy Birthday, Mike! I owe you a cake.

As for the games of my week, still chugging along in Cho Aniki. The game started as an ironic joke, but now I legitimately love it. No matter how many times I die, it never stops being fun.

Speaking of fun deaths, also playing a lot of Mega Man games in preparation for Mega Man 9 on Monday. It had been a while since I’d played the NES/SNES/PS1 era games in the series, and one thing that struck me was how vastly superior the level designs in Mega Man 1 and 2 are to just about every other game in the series, and just how incredibly awful Mega Man X5 and X6 are in comparison. The Mega Man series truly spans across the highest and lowest points of 2D platforming history. With this level of breadth in both style and quality, it’s like “Mega Man” is a game genre onto itself.

Also played some Guitaroo Man, thanks to Dale’s nostalgia inducing piece on the game. Harmonix, if you’re reading this, please take a break from your kareoke game machine building a get the rights to make the Guitaroo Man sequel. It’s a game that needs to be made. While your at it, hire Dale to write the songs.

Chad: HAPPY BIRTHDAY MIKE FERRY! 🙂

Kind of a random (but awesome!) week: Rock Band 2, Mega Man 2, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, and Tales of Vesperia.

Sorry I don’t have anything clever to say about them.

Jim:  I want to ride the Ferry.

I am 98% certain Mike has used a version of that in a pick up line at some point.

Mike: Guilty as charged.

Grim: I’ve been playing a few hours of Rock Band 2 every day since it launched and my wrists are starting to get angry at me.

Samit: I feel you, Grim. I played Rock Band 2 for the first time last night at a Dtoid NY/NJ Rock Band 2 party at Tino‘s place in the Dirty Jerz, and after doing drums on Hard for much of the night (including songs like “You Oughta Know”, which is annoying, and “One Way or Another”, which is relentless and tiring), I woke up with a sore right ankle/calf and a blister or two on my hands. But it was all worth it.

As for the rest of the week, I played the demos of Pure (fun, but I wouldn’t buy it), Fracture (lame, though I’d like to try out the multiplayer someday), and FIFA 09 (um…let’s just say that I’m glad Orcist is reviewing this game instead of me). Otherwise, I didn’t do all that much gaming — except for, of course, playing the NHL 09 demo even more (but that’s pretty much a given by this point). Instead, I rented The Fall on Blu-ray, and let me tell you, that movie looks fucking fantastic in HD. It’s a great movie, too; I highly recommend it.

Dyson: I’m patiently awaiting Mega Man 9 tomorrow for my Wii 🙂
