Games of the week for 03/01/09: William Wallace edition

Here’s one of my favorite pieces of stand-up comedy from the delightfully dry Stewart Lee, a man of whom I am a big fan. This particular bit was filmed in Glasgow, and Lee effectively trolls his entire audience in a way that even I am envious. Do make sure to check it out.

Also, videogames! We played those things this week, and you can find out exactly which ones if you hit the jump. So, get to doing that thing!

Colette: Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride, Star Ocean 4 and Galactrix have made up the majority of this week’s gaming time, since I’m working on two out of the three for review. When I have free time, I sneak in a little bit of Persona 4 here and there. It’s maddening to be on the second to last dungeon in the game, but not have time to play it! At least I know who the killer is…finally….

J.Holmes: Played a whole lot of Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop for review (ten hours in so far, and over 5,000 zombies killed). Just like with No More Heroes, I’m having a tough time putting a score to the game, because I recognize its flaws, but they haven’t effected my enjoyment of the game very much.

Come to think of it, No More Heroes and Dead Rising: CTYD have pretty much the exact same flaws; PS2 quality graphics and occasional bouts of repetitiveness. I imagine this will end up causing Dead Rising: CTYD to share No More Heroes‘s “love it or hate it” status for those who actually end up giving the game a chance.

Also played some Loco Roco 2, which sadly got lost in the shuffle of all the games I played the week before.

I love it.

Conrad: Over this past weekend, I wound up playing my PS2, something I haven’t really done a lot of lately, and found myself reminded of what a truly great console it was. I played some God of War 2 and Dark Cloud 2. Plus, since I’m about a week away from finally having a PS3 in the house on which I can play Metal Gear Solid 4, I’ve started playing through the rest of the series in chronological order.

Chad: I played a lot this week! First it was Flower (amazing!), then Noby Noby Boy (???), followed by 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand (surprisingly awesome!), a slew of Commodore 64 games (pancakes!), and ending with Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen (fingerbang-tastic!).

Yay, awesome week!

Grim: Giants: Citizen Kabuto (boobies!), Prinny, Call of Duty 4, Burnout Paradise, Death Tank, Dynamite Cop, Street Fighter IV, and a few others I can’t remember. This was easily one of my best weeks for gaming in a long time.

Justin: I picked up Street Fighter IV, and boy, am I bad at it. Like, really horrible; I had trouble getting through the arcade mode on easy! Granted, the Xbox 360 controller keeps me from being able to pull off moves half of the time, but I still felt pretty embarrassed. Maybe I should just stick to easier fighters like Ultimate Ninja Storm … or wait until another shipment of those Madcatz fight pads come in.

Chad: Oh, I also played Street Fighter IV with Topher and realized it is the best thing ever created! Send me a request to play if you see me online (Xbox 360)! I have finally lost my Xbox Live virginity and am not afraid of Xbox Live Parties anymore. The future! 😀

DMV: God Hand and Prinny: Can I really be the hero? have been kicking my ass. It’s time to man up and finish these two.

Jim: It’s been huge amounts of Killzone 2 since Tuesday for me, in preparation for our 2/10 review which is coming Tuesday. Single player was swept through and now I am truly stuck into the multiplayer, slowly getting better and better, especially now I have the medic ability. When I’m not decimating ISA scum, I’m wasting time with Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection, which finally arrived from Sega after a two-week delay. A review will be coming for that, along with Blue Dragon Plus, which I am slowly forcing my way through.

Oh, and I borrowed my father-in-law’s copy of Final Fantasy IX for the few moments of non-work-related gaming I get to have. Easily my favorite FF.

J.Ross: TF2, Left 4 Dead, Street Fighter IV, Puzzle Quest: Galactrix (FUCK KECK TRADESHIPS), and Dragon Quest V. Knives also got me to pick up Multiwinia and I played that a little. I am terrible at it.

Samit: It’s been out for more than a year, but I just picked up Burnout Paradise this past week. I have no idea why in the world I didn’t get it sooner, since I’ve been having a blast boosting through Paradise City billboards. It’s also awesome because I got 25% of the game’s Trophies within my first four or five hours of playtime.

In other news, I sang Jimmy Eat World’s “Sweetness,” which was released as Rock Band DLC this week, during RockGamer.com‘s monthly Rock Band Bar Night at the Village Pourhouse in Manhattan. Man, that song is awesome! Speaking of Rock Band, I was able to join shipero for online Rock Band on Thursday night for the first time in forever. We were kicking ass!

I spent more time replaying the Killzone 2 demo — that, and the fact that whenever I signed on to the PSN on Friday and Saturday, 80%+ of my friends list was playing the game, really makes me sad that I can’t afford to buy the game. I WANTS IT! I also played some more Noby Noby Boy. The Moon is sweet! But yeah, as I said on Podtoid last week: mindfuck.

Finally, hearing everyone talk about Street Fighter IV made me want to actually start playing my copy of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. So I did — and even though I suck at it, I was able to beat Arcade Mode with Ryu (on Easy difficulty). Yay! However, when I went up against Dtoid’s resident kung-fu expert, Y0j1mb0, I lost 11 straight times before he left (out of pity, I think). Oh well.

Grim: Samit, don’t make the same mistake I originally did by not trying out the online stuff. There’s enough great content there to be an entire game in and off itself.

Samit: Yeah, I’ve been trying to find people to play it with online. I have the PSN version — at only $20, you’d be stupid not to buy the game. I was going to play on Saturday night, but I passed out while playing Noby Noby Boy and woke up at, like 1 AM.

Come on, people — let’s fill Wildcats Stadium!

Chad: Oh, Jim, you have been playing Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection? I picked that up as well (forgot to mention it) and am loving it! It is unbelievable how many good games are compiled on that one disc. 🙂

Samit: Yeah, two of my best friends picked that up and are loving it. Apparently, the Trophies are REALLY easy to get. I WANTS IT!
