French consumer group takes on the Steam user agreement

Valve is being sued by a French consumer group that deems the terms and conditions of the Steam user agreement as “detrimental to consumer interests.”

According to redditor Silencement, consumer rights group UFC-Que Choisir states that because the Steam’s user agreement prohibits the resale of digital games, it is not permissible in French law.

The case also takes umbrage with Valve’s refusal to assume responsibility when accounts are hacked and customer information stolen, its automatic ownership of any user-created content on Steam, and the fact you can’t get anything back on your Steam Wallet even if your account is closed/banned. Valve also chooses to apply the consumer laws of Luxembourg, regardless of where the player may be in the world.

This is not the first time someone’s tried to take on Valve. What do you think about the case?
