Final Fantasy XV’s spin-off beat-’em-up game looks worth trying

A King’s Tale

Between the anime, pinball, movie, VR experience, and everything else happening around Final Fantasy XV, I must’ve let let Square Enix’s spin-off beat-’em-up game for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One slip through the cracks. Today’s trailer is the first I’m seeing of it.

A King’s Tale: Final Fantasy XV is a pre-order bonus set in “a fictitious 30 years” before the main game, and it’ll be available on the same day of release: September 30, 2016. Presumably, you will be way too busy digging into FFXV to give it a second glance. Here’s the familiar-sounding setup:

“Restless before bed young Noctis asks his father, King Regis, to tell a fairy tale full of fantasy and adventure instead of just another generic bedtime story. Regis begins with a peaceful day being disrupted when monsters raid the royal capital, Insomnia. Young Regis, joined by Weskham, starts his adventure from the royal capital. Eventually they are joined by friends Cid and Clarus, where they travel to the plains of Duscae only to discover a mysterious cave where their enemy resides. Throughout the tall tale, King Regis and Noctis interject their own commentary, adding depth and perspective to the story itself.”

I noticed a Cactuar in the trailer, so it at least has that going for it. As far as availability, A King’s Tale is tied in with FFXV pre-orders at GameStop in the United States and EB Games in Canada.
