Final Fantasy XIV director halting player housing demolition in light of people who were impacted by recent hurricanes

There’s a temporary stay

Housing is a huge part of any given MMO for a lot of people, but if a game doesn’t provide instanced housing (like WildStar), it can be nigh impossible to actually get one.

Final Fantasy XIV is one such game that has been in a “housing crisis” for a while, because despite three different zones and multiple “wards” (instances of neighborhoods) to choose from, the housing hunt is is competitive  that any vacant lots are snatched up instantly — they’re basically all gone — and when the new Shirogane district opens up in patch 4.1, it’ll probably be completely sold out in under an hour, a drought that will persist during the expansion’s roughly two year lifetime. The only respite for potential buyers is that after a specific period of time (it fluctuates but is currently at 30 days) if house owners haven’t entered their establishment it’ll be deconstructed — but right now, some people can’t even log into the game due to a recent bout of natural disasters that struck the US.

Because it’s so serious, the director of FFXIV stepped in to ensure that those impacted by the recent hurricanes Harvey and Irma, who might be without power, will still have time to log back in and retain their cribs. Naoki Yoshida took to the official forums to explain that there will be a demolition grace period of two weeks, which starts on September 15, and could be extended if needed. It’s a pretty cool thing to do!

Speaking of housing, I finally got a small lot roughly a month ago! A friend of mine stopped playing the game a little after Stormblood, and let me know the day the house was being demolished — I snatched it up quickly.
