End of an Era: PS2 stops shipping in Japan

You’ll be missed

Sony has ceased shipping of the PlayStation 2 console in Japan this week, bringing an end a 13-year lifespan. Whatever is out there on shelves is what’s left. That’s it.

According to Famitsu, more than 150 million units have been sold since the March 4, 2000 launch of the PS2. Remember that? Remember when its DVD functions were cutting edge?

The PS2 was a fine game console. I have two still, one with a tray cover that constantly falls off (damned slide card!), and another that makes gurgling noises. But I’m keeping them forever as I have dozens of PS2 games in my collection that I’ll never part with.
