Buckle up, gamers. We have our second Elder Scrolls 6 update in as many months. Kind of.
The most recent update from TES6 came last month when Bethesda said it’s “where we planned to be” in the game’s development despite announcing it a whole eight years ago. And now, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has come with another.
“Live playthrough of The Elder Scrolls VI: ***** this morning,” she teased on Twitter/X with eight asterisks, which could mean absolutely nothing. “The scale and grandeur are incredible. The story is even greater.”
Well, there you have it. It’s good to know that the game is actually able to be played and shown off after all this time. Are you excited yet, Bethesda fans? Or are you still on Skyrim 15 years later?
In the replies, Xbox fans are begging Sharma to make the game exclusive to Xbox. Others are making sure to sound off about the game hopefully being available physically on disc, and some more are hoping that the game won’t be buggy at launch. The usual.
Look, I want to get excited about TES6, but the fact is that it was announced way too soon, and we still haven’t seen even a glimpse of it, which is shocking to really sit down and think about. When can we realistically expect it? 2029? 2030? Even further out?
Bethesda’s most recent project, Starfield, was kind of cool, but ultimately not for me. A new Fallout would be really awesome, so it’s good to know that that’s also being worked on (in multiple new iterations). But reports of delays, crunch, and “shattered morale” at the studio earlier this year are plenty of reason enough to be concerned. And that’s without even factoring in a number of layoffs that hit Bethesda and multiple other Xbox studios last month as part of Sharma’s “reset.”
Any actual update on the game is nice, but today’s words from Sharma will have to ring hollow for now until we can see the game for ourselves. It’s nice to know that it’s progressing, though, and that maybe we’ll get to see it in our lifetimes.
Update on Aug. 12 at 9:20am CT: As noted by Tom Warren of The Verge, Sharma yesterday was greeted by a protest of an inflatable giant rat and red flags representing every person laid off by Xbox recently.
