At Microsoft’s E3 press conference, Crystal Dynamics was on hand to reveal the brand new Tomb Raider, and to say that Lara will be put through her paces is putting it mildly. The game starts with Lara falling down a shaft, slamming her side into rock, and yanking out a shard from her ribs (with contextual button mashing),
The aim of the game is survival, with Lara using her “suvival instinct” to highlight interactive parts of the environment. The relationship between fire and water is a big part of the experience, as Lara fights to keep her torch alive in dank, damp caves.
The demo shows some truly intense and scary looking sequences, with Lara having to run through crumbling caverns, jump chasms, and kick away pursuing would-be captors. One thing that really stands out is the amazing sense of flow that comes with the game. Lara looks beautiful as she runs, dives, and narrowly avoids getting crushed. Beautiful in a bruised, beaten, miserable way.
The game looks seriously impressive, and this is coming from someone who barely cared before now. We will have a full preview tomorrow, so stay tuned for that!
