Dragon’s Dogma 2: Should you side with Raghnall in Tensions on the Highroad

The handsome guy or the jerk.

You’re faced with an option during the Tensions on the Highroad quest in Dragon’s Dogma 2. You can stick to the plan and help the guards transport Ser Augustin to Vernworth, or you can trust Raghnall and fight off the guards. Tough choice.

When you first meet Raghnall in Bakbattahl, he himself will warn you that you shouldn’t trust him. He explains that he’s a sellsword and will take the side of whoever pays him best. However, Simon, the guard, is a jerk, while Raghnall is a dashing rogue. So, is it a trick to teach you a lesson about falling for a false facade? Should you go ahead and side with Simon in Tensions on the Highroad?

No, you should side with Raghnall. Let’s get into the details.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Tensions on the Highroad Raghnall speaking of conspiracy.

Completing Tensions on the Highroad, pick a side

When you make the trip back to Vernworth after spending some time in Battahl, a surly guard will give you the Tensions on the Highroad quest. He tells you the job is to escort Ser Augustin, a dissident against the Queen Regent, back to Vernworth. The guard suggests it will be worth your while, as Ser Augustin would no doubt be an ally.

This sends you back to Checkpoint Rest Town. You join up with a group of guards, but this quest is really awkwardly built. You’re supposed to be escorting an oxcart, but there is no oxcart. Or maybe that was just a bug on my end.

After talking to the guards, the game will cut ahead a while. The group is ambushed by Raghnall, who asks you to trust him. At that point, the fight will break out and you have a choice between attacking Simon and the guards or defend them against Raghnall.

It doesn’t really matter from questline perspective who you choose. Even if you make a mistake and hit the wrong person, the quest plays out the same. Raghnall and Ser Augustin take off into the forest, and you’re supposed to follow.

However, you should side with Raghnall. While it doesn’t affect the quest or reward, it will gain you affinity with the rogue.

Pursue Raghnall (watch out for the Cutters in the grass), and you’ll come to a cave. A short way into the cave, the floor will collapse, and you’ll be cut off from your Pawns. Find Raghnall and talk to him, and then the two of you will continue down a linear path through the cave and out onto the coast.

Once you’re alone, Raghnall will explain that the guards were trying to set you up. They were going to kill Ser Augustin and pin the crime on you. Again, this scene will happen regardless of who you side with, but Raghnall will appreciate it if you don’t attack him. Either way, you’ll be rewarded with 12000 G.
