DLSS 5, NVIDIA’s new AI tech that supposedly imbues video game graphics with never-before-seen levels of realism, has hit a new nightmare-inducing low as a player just recorded the AI hallucination to end all hallucinations.
The clip in question shows Grand Theft Auto 5 gameplay footage where a bikini-wearing woman suddenly shapeshifts into an army green beret, then the old version of Toad from Super Mario, then an old wizard with a very phallic head garment, then the god emperor from Dune, then a zombie before being fully engulfed in a large fungal mass—among many other things I can’t even begin to comprehend. It’s like visiting Dante’s Inferno and learning there are way more than “just” nine layers to it.

Did NVIDIA stumble into the first Rorschach test for gamers? In any case, and sorry to break it to you, but I’m no true Demonologist, or whatever kind of scientist warns you about a Last of Us-style worldwide fungal outbreak, but, like, if Hollywood has taught me anything, it’s that this is some evil sh*t.
That’s GTA 5 footage, a game that doesn’t feature official DLSS 5 support, so problems aren’t exactly a surprise. Still, when running incompatible mods, you’re used to them simply not running, to simply crash the game, or to create some interesting visual artifacts. Opening the gates of Hell is a first for me, and I’d say that’s enough.

This hallucination might be unique, and reproducing similar ones will likely prove difficult. Still, similar things are sure to take place if people somehow decide to adopt the tech en masse. Back when I wrote that the usage of DLSS 5 in Cyberpunk 2077 not only killed the artistic intent hundreds of people put into the game and replaced it with a hyperrealistic look of a dystopia too grim for any author to put on a screen, a surprising number of people commented that it looks “ok, actually”. I seriously doubt anyone will say that about this, and I honestly hope nobody stares into it for long in the hopes of finding anything not completely abhorrent about it.
And if that doesn’t seem bad enough as is, imagine coming across that thing while playing whatever game in VR.
