Destiny 2: How to get a high score in The Coil

Luck is as important as knowledge.

The Coil is one of the leading new activities for Destiny 2’s Season of the Wish. With winding paths, optional buffs, and new scoring systems, it can take a little acclimation before players feel entirely comfortable.

Even with the appropriate knowledge, luck still plays a hefty role in achieving a Platinum score in The Coil. Guardians must keep their eyes peeled and navigate cautiously, or efforts could be for naught. If mistakes are repeatedly made, there’s even the chance that players will be sent back to Orbit.

For Season 23, Destiny 2 is taking its narrative back to the Dreaming City and the Ahamkara. Wish magic is on full display, from hidden collectible Starcats to the new Warlord’s Ruin Dungeon and its Ahamkara-centric story. Two seasonal activities follow suit, with Riven’s Lair and The Coil featuring the ghost of the Dreaming City’s Ahamkara: Riven. While Riven’s Lair is straightforward enough, with two encounters and a puzzle room, there’s much more to The Coil. That said, if players can manage a high score, they’ll be greatly compensated.

What is The Coil?

Players jumping into The Coil for the first time might initially mistake it for Riven’s Lair. That’s because the skeletons of the two activities are almost identical, with a few key differences present throughout The Coil. Both activities start players in front of Riven; in the same place the Ahamkara is found in the H.E.L.M. The first difference is seen here, with Riven offering buffs for Guardians to purchase. In addition, players may notice that they have limited revives in The Coil. A wipe with no tokens left boots Guardians from the activity and returns them to Orbit.

As players venture through Riven’s portal and into the activity proper, it won’t be long before they begin noticing pots tucked around the platforming zones. This is another crucial difference between Riven’s Lair and The Coil. In The Coil, players’ scores are based on the amount of Wishing Glass collected. While enemies occasionally drop the triangle-shaped currency, most Wishing Glass comes from breakable pots and rare enemies called Glass Collectors. Wishing Glass is also to purchase additional buffs throughout The Coil.

After Guardians complete what would be the final boss room in a Riven’s Lair run, The Coil returns players to Riven. From here, players can buy new buffs from the Ahamkara before setting out on another path through The Coil. You can run up to four courses through The Coil, with difficulty increasing after each completed lap. If Guardians can clear all four paths, they’ll complete the activity and receive loot based on the Fireteam’s final score.

It won’t be enough for players to just enter and complete The Coil. If Guardians want to be well-rewarded for their time-intensive efforts, they’ll want to pursue a Platinum score of 150K+. As mentioned above, the score in The Coil comes strictly from the amount of Wishing Glass collected. So, every member of the Fireteam will have to be on top of spotting and collecting each shard as it appears. Complicating matters, Wishing Glass can tumble off into inaccessible areas or pits, effectively erasing score potential.

In addition to the Glass dropped by enemies and those found in pots, each platforming or puzzle section contains a hidden chest room. These chambers are sealed until certain score thresholds are met, but they’re always at the edges of the areas. Sometimes through a crack in the wall and other times via a platform above or below eye level. These rooms will contain several Wishing Glass pots and two chests. However, only one chest has loot. The other is fake and can be identified by carefully looking to see which chest rests atop a spike trap.

Depending on players’ luck, they may come across a Glass Collector during the run. These enemies hold tons of Wishing Glass, but they’ll run away and become inaccessible if not immediately taken down. Eliminating a Glass Collector substantially rewards the Fireteam, and it’s the key to a Platinum score. That said, the top reward tier is impossible to achieve if Guardians miss or don’t come across a Glass Collector. Players have already criticized this aspect of The Coil, and Bungie noted that it’s currently working on a fix.
