In early November, Capcom expects their new digital storefront to launch on the PlayStation Network. This will be the first digital storefront on the PSN. After the success of Mega Man 9, Capcom is surely seeing the promise that digital distribution holds.
According to John Diamonon, product manager for Capcom’s digital titles, Sony came to them with the idea. He states that Capcom is “supporting PlayStation Network like no other company.”
Diamonon also revealed that other publishers will offer similar digital storefronts in the future, though no names were mentioned.
Christian Svensson, VP of business development and strategic planning for Capcom wants similar things for his company on Xbox Live, but feels that “they’re not there yet.”
“As far as Microsoft goes–how can I say this diplomatically–there are things I think they’d like to do to promote content in multiple ways, and I think they’ll get there eventually… but they’re not there yet.”
For the gamer, brand-specific storefronts mean an easier way to find that company’s titles. For the company, a store means greater visibility, which will probably equal greater sales. Hopefully, this will mean more digital titles. We all win then, right?
