For those of you who got distressed over the Destructoid review — especially the chap who left some hilarious hate mail in my inbox — you can console yourself at night with the thought that Call of Duty: World at War has become the third-fastest selling game in the UK, behind GTA IV and GTA: San Andreas.
In its first week, WaW outsold Modern Warfare almost two-to-one. It has topped the UK chart, managing to put even the World of Warcraft expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, into second place. Football Manager 09 is in the third slot, unsurprisingly.
Last week, Gears of War 2 became king of the chart, while Sony’s hot holiday release, LittleBigPlanet, charted at number four. GoW2 is now occupying that fourth position, while LBP failed to get into the top ten at all this week. Ouch.
As far as WaW goes, this is hardly shocking. Big franchise, following a wildly popular release from last year. It goes to show that Activision’s “yearly exploitation” method works … although I don’t know if that’s the kind of encouragement Activision needs.
UK top ten:
1. Call of Duty: World at War
2. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King
3. Football Manager 2009
4. Gears of War 2
5. FIFA 09
6. Guitar Hero: World Tour
7. Professor Layton and the Curious Village
8. Mario Kart Wii
9. Pro Evolution Soccer 2009
10. WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2009
