Bungie reassures fans that Star Wars-flavored DLC is still ‘a Destiny story with Destiny characters’

Chill out, relax, maybe drink some blue milk.

In a world where seemingly every game features an IP crossover, Destiny 2 fans have voiced their concerns loudly about the upcoming Star Wars-inspired Renegades expansion that Bungie announced this week.

I noticed a lot of Destiny players voicing their concerns about a full-fledged Star Wars DLC, and rightfully so, especially after pre-order bonuses now allow Guardians to dress up like Darth Vader, Kylo Ren, or General Grievous, on top of other previous themed items. But Bungie is asking gamers to let them cook and trust the process when it comes to Renegades.

In today’s This Week in Destiny blog post, Bungie recapped the big announcements from earlier in the week regarding Year of Prophecy and Destiny 2’s new Fate Saga. And one of the top minds behind the game says not to expect a Duel of the Fates just yet.

“Rest assured, Guardians – everything in Renegades is in-canon for the Destiny universe, but we’re leaning into the aesthetic, tone and vibe of Star Wars to tell a Destiny story with Destiny characters,” assistant game director Robbie Stevens said.

This doesn’t really explain what Renegades is or will be about, and so gamers only have the visuals already released to go off of for now, so I understand the slight panic for those who are worried about Destiny losing its identity to a metaverse-like world. In the teaser trailer, Guardians can be seen wielding Star Wars blasters and the legendary lightsaber, but beyond that, not much else is known. And that’s likely by design.

With Renegades not due to launch until Dec. 2, whatever’s coming in Destiny 2’s story will remain secret for the next few months at least, until the expansion is detailed in a new developer stream sometime this fall ahead of its release.

Before Renegades, Destiny 2 gamers can look forward to The Edge of Fate DLC on July 15, a new raid on July 29, and large-scale update called Ash & Iron coming to the game on Sept. 2. Until then, Bungie will be working on Renegades behind the scenes to deliver something Star Wars-flavored while not being an outright IP collab like this season of Fortnite.

Basically, don’t expect Luke Skywalker to be an NPC in this DLC. At least, not yet.
