Last week’s tease was building up to Blackroom, a fast-paced, mod-friendly first-person shooter from id Software co-founders John Romero and Adrian Carmack. It’s seeking $700,000 on Kickstarter, with additional funding support coming from unnamed partners if that goal is met.

The basic premise has to do with holographic simulations going bad and bleeding into the real world, which means “environments that players might not expect in an FPS,” according to Carmack, as well as the potential for “depraved and terrifying aberrations” to run amok.

“It’s the type of shooter we’re known for, and the type of game we love to play ourselves,” says Romero. “It’s a skillful shooter, from movement to weapon and map mastery.” The pitch itself is a little light for my tastes, but I am happy to hear that he’s “creating every level.”
