Before attempting the Hunter Exam to activate your Nen make sure you’ve farmed a good weapon, have some decent skills and are on an appropriate server for good ping since there will be PVP matches. I recommend playing through the Hunter Exam with a friend via voice comms since it makes Stage III drastically easier. Here’s how to complete the Hunter Exam and activate Nen abilities in Beyond Nen.

Beyond Nen Hunter Exam Stamina Race Guide

You can join the Hunter Exam lobby from the Main Menu and here is where you can invite friends if you’re not going solo. The First Stage is The Stamina Race and it isn’t necessarily a race since you don’t have to be first but simply finish the obstacle course by reaching the end in time. Here are some notes:
- The first part is obviously dodging falling boulders which don’t cause that many problems since they have a hit delay so just watch out for red telegraphs – They also don’t slow you down that much.
- Buying the skateboard makes this section trivially easy since you’re much faster.
- It’s not P2W since if you don’t have a skateboard, practice slide jumping through it to keep your momentum which can potentially make you faster than skateboard users.
- Turn on auto-run in the Settings since sprinting like this doesn’t spend your stamina but holding Shift does (It’s a bug that will get fixed).
Beyond Nen Hunter Exam Trick Tower Guide
The second stage of the Hunter Exam is the Trick Tower where the first part is an easy labyrinth with traps and the second is mini-boss fight. In terms of the labyrinth:
- Crushing side wall traps will have a highlighted pressure plate on the ground so just walk into the plate and back out immediately to bait it out and then wait for the trap to reset to pass through.
- You can wall jump sideways to avoid a lot of traps here.
- Watch out for falling ceiling traps by keeping a lookout above you and when you see them you need to jump over their triggers on the floor or wall jump past them.
The second part is an NPC fight which is fairly straightforward. You just need to practice blocks, parries and dodges as you DPS with for your M1+uppercut combos and skills. Use air attacks to close the distance. Dodge backwards when he’s about to do his fire tornado skill and overall try to zone him with your M1s.
Beyond Nen Hunter Exam Zevil Island Guide
The Zevil Island stage is an open zone PVP match where you need to survive until the end with 2 badges. You have your own and you need to grip a player for one of theirs and just run and play defensively with 2 until the timer runs out (Skateboard or Jump slide for more speed). This is your first real skill-check and if you’re feeling confident with your ping and parries try to isolate a player for a 1v1:
- Focus on M1 uppercut combos and skills then play for cooldowns while maintaining distance.
- Use jump attacks to close the distance after you retreat to stall.
- Only use evasives when you’re in the middle of a combo you can’t get out of.
- Remember to occasionally zone your opponent while checking for other threats to avoid getting ganked.
- If you get gripped, you’ll lose a badge, instantly recover and gain 50% HP for another chance to win.
Don’t Grip Players Without a Badge: If you got a badge from a player and they attack you to get their badge back, either run or down them again but don’t grip them. Just run away after downing them since this gives you plenty of time to retreat as they recover. If you grip a badge-less player you don’t get anything and they’ll just instantly recover and attack you again.
Co-op Makes This a Breeze: I highly recommend doing Zevil Island with a friend or two for an easier time via voice comms. It makes it much easier since you can coordinate to find each other and then gank players for an easy badge grip for you and your friend. Then it’s also much easier to go on the defensive with multiple people once all of you have 2 badges.
Beyond Nen Final Hunter Exam Tournament Guide
The last stage is just a simple 1v1 against a random player in the lobby. Make sure you have good ping and follow the 1v1 tips from the Zevil Island section above. Defeating that player will get you your Hunter’s License thus successfully completing the Hunter Exam and becoming a Hunter with a special mark in the top right. This now allows you to activate your Nen abilities in Beyond Nen by finishing a short quest (more on that below). Note that if you’ve played with a friend up until now they might be matched against you so you can either 1v1 for real or ask to grip them and then help them out in return later.
How to Get Nen Abilities in Beyond Nen

After finishing the Hunter Exam and becoming a Hunter, you can activate your Nen via Rohan’s quest (The Librarian in Port Town sends you to him) by going and talking to him at Wayfarer Island in the Nen Cave. Simply press P, hide all trackers and then select only the “Active Quest” tracker and follow the “Activate Nen” prompt. Buy a Meditation Mat from the Merchant in Port Town before you go since you’ll need it for the quest. Once you reach Rohan, talk to him and follow the dialogue to activate your Nen. Rohan will then give you the meditation quest:
- If you didn’t already, you’ll need to buy a Meditation Mat from a merchant in Port Town.
- Place it on the ground and meditate by approaching it and pressing “T”.
- Finish the quick-time event game where you have to press the showcased letters on your keyboard (This gives you Nen experience for progression).
- Once you’re done go back to Rohan (Track Active Quest with “P”).
- He’ll unlock your Nen ability (Random roll), Nen techniques via the wheel with “E” and Nen charge with “G”.
- You can now meditate with your Mat and progress the game to gain more Nen experience, skill points, unlock Nen ability skills and progress your Nen.
- Press “M” to access your Nen skill tree.
