Artists Wanted: ‘True Nature’ recap and your next topic!

Recommended Videos

[Every month we post a new art assignment for the Dtoid community. Fun! You have until this Thursday, July 5th to finish your BEHIND CLOSED DOORS projects (detailed at the end of this post). On Friday, I’ll assign a new topic!]

In case you’ve forgotten, last month’s Artists Wanted assignment was TRUE NATURE. Your goal was to explore the essence of a videogame or its characters in hopes of discovering a deeper meaning or hidden reality. We received four submissions on the topic, and they were all FANTASTIC!

Our first submission for the month was “Ganon’s Fortress” by Timothy Kelly. Here’s what he had to say about his work:

I was inspired by the grandeur of the scene where you first come upon Ganon’s castle. I took quite a few artistic liberties, envisioning it in a more dramatic fashion. Most of the painting was done in one layer. I tend to work simply, then as the piece gets more complex I will add a few layers for details I need to manipulate, which eventually get merged back into the original. I finish with color grading and curves adjustments. Thanks, hope you enjoy! 🙂

Enjoy we did, Timothy!

Next up is “Samus’ Identity” by Siete KeKe. Here’s what he said about his work:

Samus is a fucking strong woman. She kicks ass all by herself in a distant planet or space colony or whatever, and she doesn’t need anybody! But confronting the space pirates, native creatures and other enemies while being always alone must not be an easy task and that makes me think that Samus must be struggling to not go fucking nuts.

She’s gotta have issues! I imagine she’s disturbed and has some creepy dark side we still haven’t met. I really liked when we first saw Samus’ eyes in the reflection of her helmet in Metroid Prime. That was fucking awesome, but I don’t really think she would have such a relaxed pretty look after all she’s been through.

Thanks for the submission!

Next, we have “Olimar the Terrible” by MeanderBot. Here’s what he had to say about his art:

Long ago, it is said that a single man descended from the stars on a strange and alien ship. Where he landed is cause for debate; some say it was on a barren circle where nothing ever grows, some say it was the nexus of what is now a barbarous tribe. But what is agreed on is that when he landed, he was greeted by a group of friendly, simple-minded plant-like creatures. Soon, he discovered that they meant him no harm. Soon, he discovered that they happily obeyed his orders without a second thought. Soon, he discovered that they were formidable in combat. Soon, he discovered that they were easily reproduced. Soon, wicked thoughts trickled into his mind…

Awesome and creepy, MeanderBot!

Finally, we have “Memories of Star Road” by Edco, my personal favorite for the month. Here’s what he had to say about his piece:

In all the games, in all the levels he’s traversed, I can’t help but wonder if Mario ever stops to realize what he’s been doing. Imagine he’s been travelling across all these bizzarre locales and then finds the first warp exit to Star World. Hey, just another level right? Later on Mario takes another path and he gets a good look at where he’s been, up in the clouds. Overwhelmed by his trials, he takes repose for the first time and wonders, “What is this crazy shit?”

Don’t worry, Mario, I’m sure your princess is just in another castle.

And that’s it for May’s submissions! Awesome, awesome job everyone! (Be sure to click on each of the artists’ names above for more info about what went into their creative process!)

Now, onto this month. June’s assignment is BEHIND CLOSED DOORS. What goes on behind the scenes in a videogame? What exists outside the game’s boundaries? Let your mind go wild!

To see your art appear on the front page, simply write a Community Blog and title it “Behind Closed Doors: [Title]”. Then just post your art (and a bit about the process that went into making it). At the end of the month we’ll gather them all up and put them on the front page!

I can’t wait to see what you people come up with this time around. Now get creating!
