The word that came down about Electronic Arts Montreal’s Army of Two sequel look to be true. Today, the studio officially announced Army of Two: The 40th Day

The game revisits the two-man team of Salem and Rios as they press through Shanghai, China shooting at things. Together. The press release reads — and we’re not making this stuff up — “Rios and Salem find themselves right in the middle of it all — the wrong place, the wrong time, but the right team.” Amazing.

Army of Two: The 40th Day will feature more co-op moves that can be used at any time, which EA says will open up new strategies and choices for players. As expected, the title is slated to hit the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this winter. But most surprising is that it’s also listed for a PlayStation Portable release.

Maybe it finally is the year Sony’s portable media monster will shine. Or should we say “right place, right time…right handheld”
