Ar Tonelico III calls itself ‘The World’s Greatest RPG’

Recommended Videos

Or does it?!?!

Indeed, that’s quite a bold statement to make for a B-list (even in Japan) developer (Gust) to make for their game, which is set to release in the wake of Final Fantasy XIII and on the same frickin’ day as Tri-Ace’s bullet-blasting extravaganza Resonance of Fate.

But there’s more to it than that. That very declaration, placed at the end of the new trailer (about 3:55) shows some clever wordplay at work. While the voicing of the line translates (roughly) as “The world’s best/strongest RPG, rings out here,” the actual Japanese kanji for “strong” is replaced with the character for “symphony,” which is pronounced the same way. The truth, then, is that the world’s greatest symphonic RPG is set to ring out here. Genius.

Oh, and the trailer shows a grand subtitle (“Ar Tonelico III: The Girl Sings the Song that Ends the World”) some a lot of melodrama, mad anime visuals, a great soundtrack, and play mechanics that involve customizing the background music, helping singers girls deal with combat schizophrenia, and song magic that gets more powerful based on cosplay and nudity.

Hm. Perhaps this is the world’s greatest RPG!!! Check out the trailer below.
