Sony admits PSP was confusing; more confident about Vita

Sony is coming out of the gate with the PS Vita with much more confidence than they ever had with the PSP. In fact, SCEE’s CEO Jim Ryan admits that they didn’t do a great job with the PSP’s marketing. He says that its marketing, which pushed the system’s multimedia features, ended up confusing many gamers.

“I think this time we’ve realized that perhaps ended up confusing consumers, and they weren’t quite sure what the device was really all about. So this time the Vita does all of that stuff that we talked about on PSP, and it does it a lot better,” Ryan told Official PlayStation Magazine UK.

They’re not making that mistake again. Games, man. Games. It’s all about games. And dual thumbsticks, of course.

“We’ve been a lot more single-minded and much more focused in our positioning of Vita. We’re saying that this is primarily a gaming device. It has been developed from the ground up as a gaming device. What it does best is play games.”

“The other thing would be that we learned that what consumers didn’t really appreciate was, in many cases, getting ports of PS2 and then PS3 games for their PSP.”

I was not confused. I just wanted more games — not ports — and didn’t care at all about watching videos or listening to music on my PSP. Thankfully, Vita seems to be on the right track.
