Gameloft gets its Final Fantasy on with Eternal Legacy

Gameloft is deliciously shameless when it comes to gaining “inspiration” from contemporary console games. Guitar Hero, Halo, Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty and Uncharted have all been turned into unofficial iPhone games courtesy of the company. Personally, I love it, and now I’m really eager to check out its latest bit of pilfering, as Eternal Legacy takes on Final Fantasy.

The game released on iTunes today for $6.99 and brings with it all the trappings of an epic JRPG. Turn-based combat, a focus on story, leveling up, and plenty of gameplay are all on the cards. It’s basically Final Fantasy without being Final Fantasy, which is just the type of game Gameloft does best.

Some people dislike Gameloft’s M.O, but I appreciate it. They often do a better job of making iPhone games than the publishers of the titles they’re copying, or otherwise bring genres to the device that just wouldn’t be there without them. It’s an interesting, if debatable, tactic, but I know I’ll be checking this one out before long.
