Weird Super Street Fighter IV DLC costume mystery solved!

Apologies in advance for the headline making this sound like a riveting tale of intrigue. It’s not — although the way some Street Fighter fans are reacting, I suppose it could be. (Oh, and sorry for the picture, too. I cannot be helped.)

Basically, owners of Super Street Fighter IV on Xbox 360 can view the new downloadable content costumes of the people they are fighting by way of a “download catalog” option. PlayStation 3 users, on the other hand, cannot do this. Why is that? Capcom’s man on the street, Seth Killian, has the answer.

“The DLC for the newest costumes is additional data that must be put on your machines from the first-party networks (XBL and PSN),” he says. “When you add new data to an existing product, there are significant costs to do so charged by the first parties.”

“On XBL, those costs were covered by Microsoft. For Sony, those significant costs are not covered. As a result, you only get the new costume data when you actually buy the costumes. Those that don’t buy the costumes can’t see them, because the new costume data isn’t present on your machine, and so you only see costumes you already have the data to represent.”

What’s more, the region in question affects these costs too. Essentially, there’s way more that goes into this process than many of us would’ve ever imagined. The more you know!
