The lack of flesh in Origins was an ‘artistic choice’

The oddest thing I’ve seen in the last few weeks — other than the return of a special someone in another new game — is the Dragon Age: Origins’ romance scene with Morrigan. Watching my character rub and hold the half-garbed wicked witch with his wool thong equipped is an experience, to say the least.  But it turns out that Bioware wanted it to be so awkward. Or, at least, planned for both characters to keep their clothes on.

In an interview with Video Gamer, Bioware boss Dr. Ray Muzyka said it was an “artistic choice” by the team behind the game to keep both characters clothed during the various romance scenes in the game.

“It’s an artistic choice by the development team,” Muzyka said. “We don’t constrain what they do. We don’t strive for gratuitous content. But we also ask the teams to choose a direction and then run with it.”

“That was their choice. That’s how they wanted to depict the romantic liaisons in the game, so that’s what we did,” he said.

Funny. I would have thought the whole “keep the clothes” on thing had something to do with avoiding an AO rating.
