The Witcher 2 dated for May 17th

Everyone who is eagerly anticipating The Witcher 2: Assassin’s of Kings will now have to wait a tiny bit longer, as the initial release date of March 2011 has been pushed to May 17, 2011. Either the game needed a bit more polish, or it just seemed like a really dumb idea to release it in the same month Dragon Age 2 hits.

Next Thursday at 18:30 CET (09:30 PST) you can watch CD Projekt’s autumn conference for “detailed information about the approaching worldwide launch of the title, as well as the Collector’s Edition of The Witcher 2” on the official site and Facebook page.

A Gamestop listing for the Collector’s Edition (via Bigdownload), which has now been pulled, showed a giant Geralt head for your desk, a very good in-game jacket that will give a big boost to sword oriented characters, a behind-the-scenes bonus DVD and some stuff you probably won’t care about.

Another interesting bit about this live conference from the press release: “And there won’t be a lack of controversial topics! The developers will explain their philosophy with regards to DRM implementation in their titles and they will let us know how it influenced the edition of the game.” Interesting, let’s hope it a bit more spicy than just “We are using Steamworks”?

Anyone looking into upgrading their PC may want to wait until Thursday’s information about the recommended specifications before jumping on some of the holiday season deals. I’m not too confident that my 2-year-old mid-range rig will handle it myself, but then again the new engine is a lot more optimized this time around.

The last we heard from the developer is that DirectX 11 is not confirmed yet, but that too could be announced next Thursday. Console people will have to wait a bit because it’s still “too early” to talk about. I wouldn’t be surprised if a console version pops up late 2011 or Q1 2012 though.
