Where does Fallout 4 take place? Locations featured in the game

Good morning, Commonwealth.

Having released in 2015, Fallout 4 is still the most recent single-player game in the series (the multi-player Fallout 76 is more recent). It is, once again, an isolated story taking place in a post-apocalyptic future. Like each Fallout, it also takes place in its own region (though Fallout 1 and 2 had some overlap). So, where does Fallout 4 take us?

Fallout 4 is set around the city of Boston, Massachusetts. But while Boston is the biggest feature on the map, it also depicts some of the surrounding regions.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that Fallout 4’s map is an abstract representation of the region, being a much smaller area than the geographical region actually takes up. Many of the locations aren’t directly named, and while they may align with a borough or city in the metropolitan area, it’s hard to confirm that they are supposed to be a representation of that area.

However, many are, so we know that Concord, Bedford, and Lexington are locations on the map. South of Boston, the area has been left unrecognizable by the Great War. The area may have been Dorchester or Quincy, but the bombings have left it an irradiated marsh called the “Glowing Sea.”

While the area has been made abstract to make exploration of it more enjoyable from a gameplay perspective, there are still real-world locations that you can visit.

While much of the Boston region has been squished for the sake of gameplay in Fallout 4, there are still real-world locations you can visit. Here are some:

  • Fenway Park (Diamond City)
  • The Old State House (Goodneighbor)
  • The Boston Public Library
  • Salem
  • M.I.T. (C.I.T.)
  • The USS Constitution
  • Old North Church
  • Spectacle Island
  • Massachusetts State House
  • Bunker Hill Monument
  • Logan International Airport (Boston Airport)

There are, of course, more places you can visit. While Bethesda took a lot of liberties with the Boston area, they tried to make it recognizable which meant incorporating real-world elements to it. However, it might give you some places to take your tour if you ever visit Boston.
