Rumor about a rumor: Wii version of Brutal Legend canceled

Recommended Videos

This October, Double Fine’s Brütal Legend will rock the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 so hard that the name of said month has been changed to “Rocktober.” And while it’s not been confirmed by the developer or its publisher Electronic Arts, rumors of a Wii version of the title have been kicking around for some time now.

Our sources have indicated that a Wii version was in development at Electronic Arts, just not with Double Fine at the helm. The keyword here is “was,” as we’ve recently learned from our sources that the Wii version of the title has been canceled due to quality and technical concerns. Word has it that quality assurance testers who moved from Electronic Arts to Double Fine were recently let go, after the demise of the project left their services unnecessary.

Back in March, 1UP spoke with Double Fine’s Tim Schafer about the rumored Wii title, when he hesitated while shooting a glance at his PR handler before saying: “We are making an Xbox 360 and a PS3 version of Brütal Legend.” This was a true statement, but definitely didn’t answer the question.

Electronic Arts didn’t return our request for comment, which isn’t surprising — responding to a rumor about a rumor is probably not in its best interest. But for Wii owners waiting for their own version of Brütal Legend, picking up an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 controller probably is.
