Yuji Naka working on a Sonic-like game, discusses Let’s Tap and Sega

The famous Yuji Naka has been chatting it up with Gamasutra where he discussed his departure from Sega, his excellent looking Let’s Tap and his plans for the future, which include a game being described as “like Sonic.” Naka, in case you did not know, was one of the original Sonic programmers. This means that, unlike most of Sonic Team, he actually knows how to make good Sonic games. That’s good.

Naka also touches upon the reason he left Sega, claiming that he got too high up on the corporate ladder and became unable to focus on the things he wanted to do: “The game industry has a very short history behind it, and as a result, the more games you make, the further you work your way up the company ladder, until you become one of the heads of the whole outfit. Once that happens, you start running out of time to actually make games.”

With Let’s Tap now out in Japan, the game creator has also shared his hope to continue the “Let’s” series of games. Sadly, Let’s Tap is not doing very well in Japan, and we’ve heard nothing about a US release. Hopefully, Let’s Tap will sound tempting enough to ensnare the casual set should it ever hit America. It would be disgusting if one of the few genuinely inventive and interesting Wii games with a gimmick that could appeal to everybody flopped.
