Here’s how to get the Final Fantasy XIV Alpine Coat for free

Look like Lord Fortemps in all your Ishgardian dealings

Final Fantasy XIV is full of wonderful cosmetic items you can collect, craft, and equip for your adventures throughout Eorzea. One of the more unique clothing items is the Alpine Coat, a gorgeously detailed set of robes modeled after Lord Edmont de Fortemps’ own fine wardrobe. Unlike other level one clothing items, it is a quest reward from Heavensward.

FFXIV Alpine Coat quest, explained

The Alpine Coat is a replica version of the outfit that Lord Fortemps wears during the Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward expansion. It is a level one glamour outfit anyone can wear. The purpose behind it is for players to add it to their glamour chest for easy outfit access and role-playing purposes down the road.

Funnily enough, it doesn’t fall into the same category as most level one cosmetics of being a crafting recipe. Instead, the FFXIV Alpine Coat is only a quest reward in the main story. Players who wish to elevate their outfit and prepare for the harsh Ishgard winters should continue the Heavensward storyline.

The quest in question is “Litany of Peace,” a level 60 Main Scenario quest from Patch 3.3. Its prerequisite quest is “Heroes of the Hour.” Completing this story-focused quest will earn the player several rewards, including the Alpine Coat for free. The only cost here is spending a few minutes in some lengthy cutscenes with Aymeric. This quest, along with the rest of Heavensward, is currently free to all FFXIV players.

In addition to this free clothing reward, you’ll also receive the Dragonsong Orchestrion Roll item, for playing the glorious theme song of the expansion at your humble abode. And you’ll receive a Wind-Up Aymeric, letting a miniaturized version of the Ishgardian leader follow you around everywhere.

The Alpine Coat might be a free reward, but it is relatively easy for some players to lose, destroy, or sell the clothing item by accident. If that happens to you, there is fortunately a solution for retrieving it, but it’ll cost you. Thankfully, you only have to spend a measly 100 Gil.

All you need to do is visit the Calamity Salvager. This is an NPC trader found in the three starter city-states. Here are his exact locations:

  • Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks (X:11.3, Y:14.3)
  • Old Gridania (X:10.0, Y:8.4)
  • Ul’dah – Steps of Thal (X:12.6, Y:13.1)

Speak with the Calamity Salvager at any of those locations and you’ll be able to purchase the FFXIV Alpine Coat. Just be sure to put it in your glamour chest this time for safe-keeping.
