There were a bunch of third-party games shown in today’s Nintendo Direct Mini Partner Showcase, but one in particular threw me at first glance. Captain Velvet Meteor: The Jump+ Dimensions is an upcoming tactical RPG that leans into guests from the Shonen Jump+ catalog.

The new tactics game from Momo-Pi Game Studio and Shueisha Games follows Damien, a boy who’s just moved to Japan. Feeling lonely in his new home, he dives into his imagination as the superhero Captain Velvet Meteor.

Along the way, he imagines a roster of his favorite Jump+ characters filling his adventures. It’s an interesting premise, emphasized by the presence of actual famous faces from the Shonen Jump+ lineup.

In today’s showcase trailer, we caught a glimpse of Loid Forger, one of the main characters of popular manga and anime series Spy X Family. There’s also Kafka Hibino from Kaiju No. 8 and several other characters. Here’s a rundown of the famous faces:

  • Loid Forger (Spy X Family)
  • Hibino Kafka (Kaiju No. 8)
  • Gabimaru (Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku)
  • Kofune Ushio (Summer Time Rendering)
  • Chrome (Heart Gear)
  • Slime (Slime Life)
  • Princess (‘Tis Time for “Torture,” Princess)
  • Kai Iod and Chloe Love (Ghost Reaper Girl)

From the pages of Jump+

As Damien, you can either chat with family in his grandmother’s home or dive deep into the Jump+ Dimensions, a.k.a. Damien’s imagination, to play tactical battles. These will, according to the eShop description, incorporate some puzzle and stealth elements. Plus team-up attacks, of course.

It’s a novel idea that I’m surprised came together. While the pillars of Shonen Jump have had plenty of games about them, Jump+ is the newer kid on the block. But its online subscription model has been making waves, alongside the popularity of titles like Spy X Family. (YouTuber SuperEyepatchWolf has a great video on this sea change, if you’re interested.)

These cameos, plus any promise of tactical RPG action, have me fairly interested in Captain Velvet Meteor. I am a bit bummed by the absence of Chainsaw Man though, even if his particular brand of action might be a little intense for this game’s E for Everyone rating.

Captain Velvet Meteor: The Jump+ Dimensions hits Nintendo Switch on July 28, 2022.
