Summer Game Fest confirms Witchfire early access is exclusive to Epic Games Store

As always, I’m intruiged

A long long time ago, we got details for Witchfire. It’s been in the hopper for years now but the The Astronauts-developed FPS is now finally coming out in early access form later this year. The Summer Game Fest trailer today re-confirmed it!

Witchfire evokes a Hexen-like feel with a very old school FPS vibe, framed around a “dark fantasy” world. The studio notes that the game will be heavily action-oriented with “no cutscenes,” and given how thirsty folks are for classic FPS games with a modern sheen, I can say with certainty that it has a baked-in audience.

The Early Access version is coming to PC later in 2022 (Q4 is targeted) on the Epic Games Store, with a wishlist option. It’s hard to believe that after all this time The Astronauts only has The Vanishing of Ethan Carter under its belt: but it’s actually a very small studio, and I can’t wait to see what they came up with.

The studio has a full rundown of the game on their site, with an FAQ of sorts. The Early Access version is exclusive to the Epic Games Store, but “later on it will come to other platforms.” They describe the early access development period as a “journey” of sorts, similar to how Hades turned out: just to give you an idea of how long it might take until the full release.
