PSP isn’t in the shadow of the DS Colossus, claims Sony

Despite the PSP’s reputation as a bit of a let-down and the DS’ reputation as a ridiculous success story, Sony does not think that its handheld is overshadowed by Nintendo’s dual-screened moneymaker. Claiming to be very happy with the PSP, SCEE boss David Reeves touted the system as a success.

“I think you can … see the smile on our faces when we talk about what we’re offering at this price and the games that are available,” Reeves claims. “We’re very, very happy and comfortable with our PSP business.

“And I don’t think we’re necessarily in the shadow of DS – they have different types of games and we have a different positioning for PSP which is not just about gaming, but Go Explore and everything else that comes with it.”

Every time I do a story on the PSP, I go out of my way to say that I love it, because it’s true. I have big love for the PlayStation Portable and I think it’s a shame that it never quite caught on. It’s been running mostly on pure potential for years, with only a handful of titles that are absolute must-have games. I really hope that Square-Enix and Capcom’s continued support, as well as the PSP 3000, shows other publishers that there is money to be made from the PSP. I just don’t know if it’ll ever catch on after so many years.
