Publisher NIS America has officially announced that it will be bringing a localization of Granzella’s R-Type Final 2 to the west next year. The pseudo-sequel/remake will launch in North America and Europe on PS4, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch in spring 2021.

Designed as a love letter to Irem’s genre-defining shmup series, R-Type Final 2 features all of the high-intensity intergalactic action of the classic titles but spruced up with modern-day visuals and powerful sound. Players can choose from one of a selection of vessels taken from the series’ storied history, before taking to the stars in a new mission against the evil Bydo empire.

R-Type Final 2 went into development in the summer of 2019, after a massively successful Kickstarter campaign that saw fans raise double the targeted $400,000 in less than a week. Various stretch goal targets have been met, which adds new ships and customization options, as well as side-modes such as Ghost and Time Attack. It’s all shaping up to be a great release, and a must-have for fans of classic arcade action.
