R-Type Final 2 Kickstarter sees completion in under 48 hours

Preparing for take off

Last week, we reported that indie developer Granzella was opening a Kickstarter campaign in hopes to raise funds for a sequel to Irem's 2003 shmup R-Type Final. It appears to have been a resounding success, with the crowdfunding campaign smashing its goal in less than two days.

Granzella managed to blast past its target of around $400,000 with the help of some 4,000 backers (as of this writing) and has now added a series of stretch goals to the project, including a Ghost mode, cross-platform leaderboards, support for more languages, and even remastered levels taken from classic titles in the R-Type series.

R-Type Final 2 itself is expected to be a modern-but-faithful adaptation of the original game, including multiple vessels, new weaponry, remixed music, a customisation mode and various difficulty options. Six days still remain in the crowdfunding campaign, so hopefully even more features will find their way into Final 2, ultimately resulting in an amazing shmup worthy of the R-Type pedigree.

R-Type Final 2 is currently in development for PS4, PC, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. It is tentatively expected to release in late 2020.
