We might not know what the future of Zelda holds, but producer Eiji Aonuma says it’ll involve freedom

Nintendo is rightfully being cagey about what the new Zelda (yes, there’s another one, it’s confirmed if you didn’t assume it was already!) entails. Given the massive critical and commercial success of Breath of the Wild it stands to reason that they’ll borrow a lot from their hit, or even deliver a full-on Majora’s Mask to Ocarina of Time style follow-up, but in the meantime producer Eiji Aonuma is keen to drop little kernels here and there of what might be.

Speaking to IGN UK, Aonuma states: You know, I can’t speak to what other people, other companies will do in their own games, but I think for me, especially just in terms of the Zelda series, the incredible freedom that this game offers you and how well that’s been received…to me, it means that freedom, that level of freedom is something that needs to be maintained in Zelda games going forward. My eyes have been opened to how important that is.”

After playing the walking/tunnel simulator of Skyward Sword, I also found this shift important. Breath of the Wild wasn’t perfect (yep, a 10 here isn’t “godly perfect,” just very good), but I’d like to see more games like it.
