Star Wars Battlefront won’t have a server browser

Because matchmaking always works…

DICE has a history of controversy when it comes to server browsers in its games. Before release, there was a lot of criticism of Battlelog in Battlefield 3, which saw the server list removed from the game and shoved into your web browser instead.

After all the complaints and controversy, it worked all right. It was nice being able to load the game in the background and do other things, but it still felt like I was unnecessarily tied to EA.

So they decided to get rid of it entirely for Battlefront. No server browser, no people complaining about said server browser, right DICE?

In a post by the Battlefront community manager on reddit, it was confirmed that there is no server browser anywhere in Battlefront, instead relying on a matchmaking system:

Star Wars Battlefront will not offer a server browser, but will utilize a new skill based matchmaking system.

Obviously the reception to this wasn’t great. Server browsers are a pretty essential feature, and pretty importantly this removal precludes the chance for there to be third-party dedicated servers. When EA pulls the plug for the game’s servers, there’s a good chance the game itself will go with it.

Battlefront releases November 19 in North America and Australia, and November 20 in the EU. There’s also a beta coming in early October, should the lack of server browser not put you off.
