Remember the bad God of War clone from two E3’s ago?

Ascend: New Gods was on a short list of new IP shown off by Microsoft two years ago at E3. Then it disappeared and no one seemed to mind because it looks kind of derivative. Since then, it’s gotten an Ascend: New Name; it’s now called Ascend: Hand of Kul. For some reason. It doesn’t look very Kul.

New Gods was actually supposed to be the first free-to-play Xbox 360 title, a distinction it has since missed out on. Now, the renamed Hand of Kul is finally launching after a July closed beta, according to Major Nelson. Of course, no game is actually free-to-play on Xbox 360 because of the Xbox Live Gold requirements.

I’ve got to give them a Hand of Kul for even releasing it, though it does feel like a testing the waters of free-to-play on the service more than anything else. Are you willing to give it a shot?
