Police Quest makes a comeback in the form of Precinct

And Kickstarter gets a police presence

When I was scouring adventure game titan Sierra On-line’s back catalog in the ’90s, one title stood out from its generally light-hearted peers and demanded that I play it immediately: a game where instead of playing a space janitor or a desperate sex pest, I could be a cop, fighting gangs, solving murders, and handing out parking tickets. That game was ex-police officer Jim Walls’ Police Quest, originally designed in ’87, and it would eventually spawn a long running series that lasted for 11 years.

Together with Sierra and adventure game vets, Jim Walls is returning to the much loved series, almost. Precinct is a “spiritual successor” to Police Quest, putting players in the role of Officer Maxwell Jones, as he attempts to solve crimes based on real police cases and work his way up the ranks. It’s a first-person adventure game, and like its predecessor favors realism and the following of police procedure.

Precinct‘s Kickstarter, which launched yesterday, has already reached over $35,000 out of its $500,000 goal, so it’s off to a good start. I’ll be chatting with Jim and his cohort Robert Lindsley next week, so keep an eye out for that.
