Sega really wants to get Castle of Illusion right

Remake comes with original director?s blessing

It can’t be easy trying to do justice to a legacy as large as Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse. Take in Mickey’s rough patches in his last few games, and it’s not hard to see why many fans would be so apprehensive to jump on board.

Sega Australia knows this, and at the very least, seems sincere in trying to do right by the original. In this behind the scenes developer diary, the Sega Australia team is joined by the original Castle of Illusion director Emiko Yamamoto, and art director Takashi Yuda. The new class has their blessings, now let’s see if they have their magic.

If there is a glimmer of promise, it’s that the new team understands that this can’t be a straight remake (I’m sure fans would be happy with that) and are making measured efforts to add what the hardware of the time couldn’t handle. Retro plus, as studio director Marcus Fielding puts it.
