Bungie’s Destiny to feature ‘monetization’ shenanigans

Shake that money raker!

Monetization. It’s an ugly word, especially to those aware of its implications. According to an Activision employee resume, it’s also coming to Bungie’s upcoming shooter, Destiny. You may be feeling a cold shudder running down your spine right now — that’s normal.

The LinkedIn profile of product manager director Ryan Wener, dug up by Superannuation, makes note of “monetization modeling” as part of his Destiny work. While vague, the general thought is that Bungie’s game will make inroads into the increasingly popular fee-to-pay market, introducing microtransactions to the purchased experience.

Whatever the deal, expect to hear the M-word a lot more than we do now in the upcoming years. As the game-buying public shatters into various smaller groups, major publishers will need to make more cash per game in order to keep meeting their financial expectations. The next generation may indeed by the age of the microtransaction.

And won’t that be utterly lovely?
